Globalization is Inevitable and Here

Many people have various opinions and ideas about globalization and views on the positive and negative aspects to the concept.  However, one thing remains a fact despite all of the disagreements:  we are in an age of globalization and it is inevitable to avoid.  Think about it for a moment:  how could you reverse globalization at this point in the game?  The answer is simply that you cannot.  Moreover, globalization does have a few drawbacks, but for the most part it is a good and necessary thing for the world in which we live in today.

Thomas Friedman, who is a famous writer in New York City has a thesis that globalization is a good thing.  He made a documentary on all of the jobs that are being outsourced to India.  A lot of people are complaining that our jobs are being lost overseas.  However, how many Americans would really be willing to answer phones all day for tech support or call and try to products to people?  Moreover, the people in India are happy to do it for 200 dollars a month which equates to 1,000 dollars a month in the states.  No one would be willing to work any job for that price because it would be nearly impossible to survive in America on that salary.  While the Indians are happy to do these jobs, this opens up more Americans for innovation and driving the economy even further.  Thus, outsourcing of jobs is a win-win for all parties involved.  Finally, it is much cheaper to live in India so the workers are happy to work for 200 dollars a month (this was from the video) and they had money leftover to go buy designer products.  In addition, American businesses are able to make more money due to the lesser salaries so everyone is happy.

Another prominent figure in the globalization debate is that of Naomi Klein who is against globalization and corporations and the fact that everything in our lives today is “branded”.  She wants to get rid of all the brands such as Nike and Starbucks for instance because they are providing a disservice to everyone.  However, the fact remains that these businesses are the people bringing us the products we need both to survive and enjoy our lives.  If corporations and brands are done away with, how are we going to get our soap, clothes, and other necessary items for an enjoyable life?

While globalization has far more positives than negatives there isn’t much point in wasting time arguing against the idea that has become a major component of every day life.  Like it or not, globalization is here to stay for the foreseeable future and is likely to expand to even greater heights.
